What is an Otoplasty?
An otoplasty (often called “ear pinning” surgery or an “ear tuck”) is a surgical procedure that addresses the size, shape, and/or position of the ears. The procedure is often performed on patients with overly prominent ears, ears that stick out, or those with other concerns. While for some, the procedure is done at a young age, many others choose to undergo an otoplasty in adulthood.
Two popular techniques focus on recreating the antihelical fold of the ear and setting back the conchal bowl–these are called the Mustarde and Furnas techniques, respectively.
What is Incisionless Otoplasty?
A novel approach to standard otoplasty surgery, Dr. Hassanzadeh offers incisionless, or scarless, otoplasty. This new, minimally invasive technique provides the same outcome as traditional otoplasty without the need for surgical scars or general anesthesia. Sutures are placed under the skin to fold the ear without any incisions created.

The Otoplasty Procedure
At the beginning of your otoplasty procedure, we’ll administer local or general anesthesia as needed to ensure you’re comfortable throughout the surgery. From there, Dr. Hassanzadeh will mark your ears at the site of necessary incisions, reshape or remove cartilage, and place the necessary sutures before closing.
For an incisionless otoplasty, which Dr. Hassanzadeh typically performs in the office, she will first numb your ears with local anesthesia. Subsequently, she will score the front surface of the auricular cartilage to create flexibility for folding. She then will place sutures under auricular skin but through cartilage to create an antihelical fold and to reposition the conchal bowl if needed.
The procedure usually takes 1-2 hours.
Otoplasty Recovery
After the procedure, you may have some swelling, bruising, and some discomfort, but over-the-counter pain medication can usually address any discomfort. You will have a compressive wrap surrounding your ears to protect your ears as they heal, which we encourage you to wear as much as possible for 2 weeks. Cold compresses can be used to help reduce the swelling. We also recommend lying down with your head elevated. You will also need to avoid sleeping on your side.
Most patients need only a few days to 1 week off of work, but it will take about 6-8 weeks for a full recovery.
Am I a Candidate?
Ideal candidates for otoplasty are patients who are in generally good health, have realistic expectations, are nonsmokers, and are struggling with the look of their ears. Otoplasty can be performed at just about any age after the ears have reached their adult size.
